Everything Locals Should Know About The National Masters

The 2006 AXCS National Masters slated for Bend/Mt Bachelor this March 22-26 is in the final planning stages with "all systems go" according to locally-based American Cross Country Skiers (AXCS) National Director J.D. Downing.

"The level of pre-planning that has gone on for the past two years has really made this winter very smooth in terms of getting ready for the Nationals," says Downing. "We've gotten interest nationwide and there is little doubt that tens of thousands of skiers from coast-to-coast are fully aware the Nationals will be here in Bend this March. The biggest key is simply getting people on planes and into cars to actually get them here. Of course it will also really help if we have the strongest possible representation from the Pacific Northwest...starting with local skiers!"

Complete event information is now posted on xcskiworld.com with an information display board soon available at the Mt Bachelor Nordic Center. Our fine local ski shops will also soon have basic information and can serve as additional resources.

For those locals interested in being involved with the Nationals, AXCS offers the following:

Race Volunteers -- Local race organizer MBSEF will be conducting all the races and volunteers are needed on all race days (Thursday, Saturday, Sunday...March 23, 25, 26) as well as a few set-up helpers on Tuesday, March 21. Please contact the MBSEF office at 388-0002 to volunteer.

Race Participants -- Although you can register for all the Nationals events up until the morning of each race, all skiers are encouraged to sign up before March 17 to take advantage of the last pre-registration discount. You can register by the race or sign up for the full series. Discounts are offered for current members of the American Cross Country Skiers (AXCS) but you will need to join at least several days before registering to make sure your discount applies.

Families -- Don't forget about the MBSEF Youth Festival running concurrent with the National Masters the weekend of March 25-26. See http://www.mbsef.org or contact the MBSEF office for details.

Are There Any Restrictions On Race Entry? -- None whatsoever. The AXCS National Masters is open to all ages and absolutely any ability. You do not have to qualify in any way and you also don't have to worry about your ability standard. No matter who you are...you'll fit in. Trust us! The Nationals attracts near-beginners thru former Olympians just like any other citizen race. One big attraction at the Nationals is the wave starts by age/gender classes so that you don't have to worry about being caught up in a mob start. Another positive feature is that all three courses have been carefully designed to highlight the easiest possible terrain at Mt Bachelor. Remember also that the Sunday, March 26 National Masters races are also one and the same with the 2006 Cascade Crest. There is no separation of these events!

Spectators -- Anyone and everyone is encouraged to come up to the Nordic Center on any of the race days and cheer on locals and visitors alike. Despite the heady title, the Nationals will actually have a minimal impact on daily skiing by non-racers due to course design. Races will easily be over on all days by noon. We especially would like to see youth and high school skiers out there making noise for their parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles that support the younger generations so often! The awards on Thursday, March 23 will now be held in conjunction with an AXCS Open House at the Deschutes Brewery Mountain Room from 5-6:30pm. Everyone is invited to stop by, cheer on the class winners, enjoy refreshments, and see plans for the future of U.S. masters skiing. The awards for Saturday, March 25 will be held on the downtown plaza right outside the Bendistillery Martini Bar starting promptly at 5pm. A big local show of support would be wonderful and there will be raffle items for anyone in the crowd.

Final Note...The 2006 and 2007 National Masters have been located here in Bend for very specific reasons not the least of which is the energy of the local ski community. The success (i.e. turnout of racers) these two years will directly determine whether the Nationals becomes a permanent fixture on the local event scene. Support by every member of Tumalo Langlauf (whether via racing, volunteering, or spectating) can go a long way towards making this season-ender test a huge step forward for our local ski community. See you there!
